CQC report explained · a residential care home
What the CQC found at Wynhill Lodge Short Breaks Service
Rated Requires improvement: inspectors found the home was not performing as well as it should and told it what to change.
What inspectors found, December 2018
Wynhill Lodge Short Breaks Service was rated Good; inspectors found safe, kind and person-centred care with no serious concerns.
This was an announced comprehensive inspection on 15 November 2018. One inspector spoke with people using the service, staff and a health professional. They observed care and checked three care records, staff training, medicines, incidents, audits and safety records.
The home supports up to 70 people at different times for short breaks lasting between one and 21 nights. Five people were using the service during the inspection. Inspectors found enough trained staff, safe medicines practice, suitable risk assessments and clean premises.
People were involved in their care and were supported to make choices, communicate their views and take part in activities. Staff respected privacy and dignity. Meals, healthcare, activities and information were adapted to people's needs.
The home was rated Good in all five areas and overall. This was unchanged from the previous inspection on 12 May 2016. Inspectors found no evidence of serious risks or concerns.
Enough skilled staff
Inspectors found enough experienced staff who responded quickly to people's requests and communicated effectively with them.
“People were supported by sufficient numbers of experienced staff who had the right skills.” from the report
Positive experiences
Feedback from people who used the service was consistently positive, including about the staff and their short breaks.
“All 30 people said that they liked the staff.” from the report
Active monitoring
The management team used audits and feedback to identify improvements to care records, activities and monitoring.
“The registered manager and team leaders carried out audits to check that staff were working in the right way to meet people's needs and keep them safe.” from the report
Some staff felt undervalued
minorParts of the staff survey produced disappointing results. The provider was taking action because fewer than half of responding staff said they always felt valued.
“Action was also being taken to address what the provider considered to be disappointing results to parts of a staff survey where only nine out of 26 staff reported that they 'always felt valued'.” from the report
