The latest report, explained

What inspectors found, March 2018

Woodleigh Manor was rated Outstanding overall, with exceptional caring and personalised support, although inspectors found shortfalls in decisions and risk checks for locked bedroom doors.

This was an unannounced inspection on 6 and 21 December 2017. Inspectors observed care, spoke with people, visitors, staff and a health and social care professional, and reviewed care plans, medicines records, staffing, training and management records.

Inspectors found that people received kind, respectful and highly personalised care. Staff supported people to remain independent, pursue their interests and achieve personal goals. Care was especially responsive for people with complex needs.

The home was rated Good for safe, effective and well-led services. It was rated Outstanding for caring and responsive services. The overall rating improved from Good at the previous inspection in June 2015.

Inspectors found that some bedroom doors had been locked without the required capacity assessments, best-interest decisions and risk assessments. The home acted promptly and had completed the required work by the second inspection day, but its audits had not identified the problem.

What inspectors praised
  • Kind and respectful care

People were treated with dignity and privacy. Staff were patient, compassionate and took time to communicate in ways that suited each person.

“People were consistently treated with dignity and respect and their privacy was respected.” from the report
  • Personalised support

Staff understood people's histories, preferences and goals. They helped people develop skills, regain independence and achieve things that mattered to them.

“People's care was based around their individual goals and their specific personal needs and aspirations.” from the report
  • Safe medicines management

Staff were trained to give medicines safely. Records, storage and regular audits were checked and found to be appropriate.

“Medicines were managed safely. Staff had received relevant training and regular medicine audits were taking place.” from the report
  • Strong staff support

Staff described a positive workplace and received regular supervision, appraisals and training. The manager was seen as visible and supportive.

“Staff were well supported and motivated by the registered manager.” from the report
What inspectors were concerned about
  • Locked bedroom doors

    serious

Some bedroom doors were locked while people were inside. At first, the home did not have the required risk assessments or recorded best-interest decisions for this practice, although it acted promptly during the inspection.

“We saw there were no individual risk assessments in place to provide information for staff to adequately understand or mitigate the risks posed to people by having their bedroom door locked.” from the report
  • Audits missed the problem

    needs fixing

The home's regular quality checks had not identified the locked-door issue or the missing related assessments. The manager and provider took immediate action once inspectors raised it.

“none of the audits we reviewed had highlighted the concerns we found with people's doors being locked” from the report
