What inspectors found, February 2019
St Johns House is rated Outstanding overall; inspectors found exceptional care and leadership, with safety rated Good.
This was a scheduled inspection over 13 and 20 November 2018. It was unannounced on the first day. Inspectors spoke with 24 people, nine relatives or visitors and staff, and reviewed care records, medicines records, recruitment files, training, complaints and other documents.
The home was rated Outstanding overall. Effective care, caring, responsiveness and leadership were all rated Outstanding. Inspectors found personalised care, strong relationships, excellent activities, good links with health professionals and a clear focus on people's choices, independence and quality of life.
Safety was rated Good. Inspectors found enough staff, suitable recruitment checks, safe medicines systems, appropriate risk assessments and good infection control. The previous overall rating was also Outstanding, and inspectors said the home had improved its rating in two key questions.
Personalised care
Care plans reflected people's individual needs, preferences and hopes. Staff worked with people, families and professionals to support positive outcomes.

Kind and respectful staff
Inspectors found staff to be compassionate and respectful. People were given time to speak, and their views and choices were taken seriously.

People took part in varied activities and maintained links with schools, charities, families and local groups. These activities were reported to improve people's quality of life.

Managers had a clear focus on improvement and knew what was happening in the home. People and staff were regularly asked for their views.
