What inspectors found, February 2023

Richmondwood Rest Home was rated Good; inspectors found safe, well-managed care, with two potential safety risks fixed during the visit.

This was an unannounced focused inspection on 17 and 18 January 2023. One inspector spoke with people, relatives, staff and health and social care professionals. They also reviewed care records, medicines records, recruitment files, accident reports and quality checks.

The home was rated Good overall. Safe and Well-led were both rated Good. Inspectors found that people felt safe, staff knew people's needs, medicines were managed safely and there were enough suitably trained staff.

Inspectors found three wardrobes that had come away from their wall fixings and some uncovered radiators in shared areas. These could have caused harm, but the manager arranged for the wardrobes to be secured and radiator covers to be installed immediately. This focused inspection did not reassess Effective, Caring or Responsive.

What inspectors praised
  • Personalised risk planning

Risks were assessed, reviewed and recorded in detail. Staff followed individual plans and used the least restrictive approach while supporting people's independence.

“Risk assessments were personalised, detailed and gave staff clear guidance on ensuring people were supported safely.” from the report
  • Safe medicines

Staff were trained and checked as competent. Medicines were recorded, audited and given as prescribed, including occasional medicines and creams.

“Medicines were managed, administered and stored safely.” from the report
  • Reliable staffing

Inspectors found enough staff on duty and a stable team. Regular bank staff helped provide consistent care when cover was needed.

“There were adequate numbers of staff available on each shift to ensure people were cared for safely.” from the report
  • Open management

The home had regular audits, staff meetings and feedback systems. Staff said they felt supported, valued and able to raise concerns.

“There was an ethos of continuous improvement and learning.” from the report
What inspectors were concerned about
  • Unsecured wardrobes

    needs fixing

Three wardrobes had come away from their wall fixings and could have toppled. They were secured immediately during the inspection.

“these wardrobes could pose a topple risk for people.” from the report
  • Uncovered radiators

    needs fixing

Some radiators in shared areas were not covered and could have caused scalding if someone fell against them. Protective covers were arranged immediately.

“Some radiators in communal areas were not covered, this could potentially pose a risk to people from scalding” from the report
