CQC report explained · a residential care home
What the CQC found at Ribble Valley Care Home
Rated Good: inspectors found the home performing well and meeting their expectations.
What inspectors found, August 2022
Ribble Valley Care Home was rated Good; inspectors found caring, safe care, with a recommendation to improve controlled medicines records.
This was an unannounced inspection on 21 July 2022. Inspectors spoke with five people, five relatives and four staff. They reviewed care records, medicines records, recruitment files and the home's management records.
All five areas were rated Good: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Inspectors found enough staff, safe recruitment, suitable training, person-centred care and positive relationships between people and staff.
The main shortfall was in recording controlled medicines. The correct amount of medicine was present, but records were not always completed properly. Inspectors made a recommendation for the provider to review its practice.
Kind and respectful care
Inspectors saw positive relationships between staff and people. People said staff were kind, respectful and compassionate.
“We observed positive interactions between staff and people who used the service. People were addressed by their preferred names and always greeted by staff.” from the report
Staffing and recruitment
Staff had criminal record checks before starting work, and inspectors found enough staff on duty to meet people's needs and keep them safe.
“Staff were safely recruited and inducted into their roles and there were enough staff on duty to meet people's needs and keep them safe.” from the report
Personalised support
Care plans reflected people's needs, choices and communication preferences. Staff knew people well and provided support in line with their plans.
“The content of people's care records demonstrated staff had a good knowledge of people's needs, and this supported staff to deliver individualised care to each person.” from the report
Activities and involvement
People were offered activities based on their interests, and people and relatives were involved in care planning and making suggestions.
“The provider employed an activity coordinator who arranged a programme of activities and entertainment according to people's preferences.” from the report
Controlled medicines records
needs fixingThe correct amount of controlled medicines was present, but the records were not completed properly. Inspectors recommended that the provider review its recording practice.
“Medicines were overall managed safely. However, we identified an issue with the recording of controlled medications.” from the report
