The latest report, explained

What inspectors found, July 2023

Rated Good; inspectors found safe, kind and personalised care, with further mental capacity training planned.

Inspectors made an unannounced visit on 22 June 2023. They spoke with people living at the home, relatives, staff and a health and social care professional. They also checked care, medicine and management records.

The home was rated Good in all five areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Inspectors found enough staff, safe medicines practices, suitable care plans, kind interactions and good communication with families and professionals.

The report describes improvements since the new provider and management team took over. The home had stronger systems for checking quality and safety, and people, relatives and staff spoke positively about the changes.

This was the first inspection since the home registered with the current provider. The previous provider was also rated Good in a report published on 21 April 2022.

What inspectors praised
  • Safe care and staffing

Inspectors found that risks were well managed and that there were enough staff. The home did not use agency staff, so people were supported by staff they knew.

“Risks to people's safety and wellbeing were assessed and well managed.” from the report
  • Personalised care plans

Care plans included people's histories, preferences and health needs. People and relatives were involved in developing and reviewing them.

“Care plans were person centred and had detailed information about people's backgrounds, history, social, physical, and mental health needs.” from the report
  • Kind and respectful staff

Inspectors saw consistently kind and compassionate interactions. People were supported to make choices and maintain their dignity and independence.

“Without exception the interactions between people and staff at all levels were kind and compassionate.” from the report
  • Strong communication and leadership

The new management team kept people, relatives and staff informed. Quality checks were used to identify and act on improvements.

“There were robust quality assurance and auditing systems in place designed to drive improvements in the service's performance.” from the report
What inspectors were concerned about
  • Mental capacity training

    minor

Managers identified that staff would benefit from more training about mental capacity. The report says this training had been booked, so families may wish to check that it has been completed.

“The management team had identified that further staff training in the area of mental capacity would be beneficial, so that staff had a better understanding in this area.” from the report
Questions to ask them, based on this report
  1. 01Has the planned further training on mental capacity been completed, and how is staff understanding checked?
  2. 02How are people's views included in care plan reviews, and how often are those reviews updated?
  3. 03How will you keep families informed through meetings, conversations and the relatives' mobile app?
  4. 04What progress has been made with the environmental action plan, including the planned new kitchen?
  5. 05How do you ensure there are enough familiar staff when there are absences?

This was an unannounced inspection covering all five key questions, including infection prevention and control; it was the first inspection since registration with the current provider.
