CQC report explained · a residential care home
What the CQC found at Madeira House
Rated Good: inspectors found the home performing well and meeting their expectations.
What inspectors found, March 2019
Rated Good; inspectors found safe, kind and personalised care, with some areas of the home needing refurbishment.
This was an unannounced planned inspection on 16 October 2018. Two inspectors reviewed information, spoke with people using the service, relatives and staff, observed care, and checked care, medicine, recruitment and management records.
The inspectors rated the home Good in all five areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. They found enough staff, safe medicine systems, clean surroundings, suitable food, respectful care and support that was tailored to people's needs and interests.
The home had a new manager during the inspection. The manager was approachable and was working with staff, families and local organisations to improve the service. Some parts of the building looked tired and needed decoration, but the report says this work was ongoing.
The overall Good rating means the inspectors judged that people received good-quality care and that legal requirements were met. The previous inspection was also rated Good, in a report published on 1 February 2016.
Kind and respectful staff
Inspectors observed warm relationships between people and staff. People and relatives also gave positive feedback about how people were treated.
“People were cared for by kind, caring and compassionate staff from all disciplines.” from the report
Personalised activities
People were supported to follow their own interests and take part in individual and group activities. The home also helped people connect with community groups.
“People were supported to maintain their hobbies and interests and enabled to develop new ones.” from the report
Quality monitoring
The manager and provider used audits, meetings and governance systems to check care and identify improvements.
“There were robust quality monitoring and clinical governance systems and processes in place.” from the report
Some areas looked tired
minorInspectors said some parts of the home needed refurbishment and decoration. The manager said decorating was already under way.
“Some areas of the service looked tired and would benefit from refurbishment and decoration.” from the report
Manager registration was pending
minorThe home did not have a manager registered with CQC when inspectors visited. The report says the application was authorised in November 2018.
“The service did not have manager registered with the Care Quality Commission at the time of our inspection.” from the report
