CQC report explained · a residential care home
What the CQC found at Coton Grange
Rated Good: inspectors found the home performing well and meeting their expectations.
What inspectors found, February 2019
Rated Good; inspectors found safe, kind and personalised care, with plans to offer more activities.
This was an unannounced, planned comprehensive inspection on 16 January 2019. One inspector and an expert by experience reviewed care records, medicines records, audits and feedback. They spoke with people living at the home, relatives, staff, managers and other professionals.
The inspectors found the home clean and comfortable, with enough staff. People said they felt safe and happy. Medicines were recorded correctly, risks were assessed, staff were trained, and safeguarding systems were in place. Care was kind, respectful and based on people's needs, choices and preferences.
All five areas were rated Good: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. The overall rating remained Good. Safe had improved from Requires Improvement at the March 2016 inspection, when medicines ordering needed improvement.
People felt safe and at home
People told inspectors they felt safe and happy. The home was clean, comfortable and gave everyone their own room with en-suite facilities.
“People told us they felt safe and happy and the service was their home.” from the report
Medicines were managed safely
Medicines records were correct, and staff had training and checks on their competence. The provider was also installing air conditioning in the medicines storage room.
“We checked people's medicines and their medication administration record (MAR) folders and found that staff were recording and logging people's medicines correctly” from the report
Kind and respectful care
Inspectors saw staff speaking warmly, responding quickly and checking whether people were comfortable, needed a drink or snack, or were in pain.
“Staff communicated with people in a warm and friendly manner, and gave people the time they required to answer.” from the report
Personalised support
Care plans described people's needs, risks, preferences and interests. Staff knew people's personalities and supported activities that mattered to each person.
“Each person using the service had detailed care plans that identified and recorded their needs and highlighted any risks.” from the report
Open management and quality checks
People and staff spoke positively about management. The provider used feedback, meetings and audits to monitor care and make improvements.
“The service was consistently managed and well-led.” from the report
Some people wanted more activities
minorFeedback showed that some people wanted a wider range of activities. The provider had started monthly discussions and included increasing activities in its improvement plan.
“However, some people had suggested they would like more activities.” from the report
