This was an announced inspection on 27 October 2020. It was part of a CQC review of infection prevention and control in care homes during the coronavirus pandemic.
Inspectors found that visitors could see relatives safely by appointment. The home supported people who needed to isolate, used dedicated staff teams, arranged regular testing and followed guidance for new admissions.
Staff had infection control training and refresher training was arranged. Inspectors were assured that the home used personal protective equipment safely, kept the building clean and had an up-to-date infection control policy.
This inspection was not a full assessment of the service. The overall service and Safe rating were both recorded as inspected but not rated.
Safe visiting
Visitors could meet relatives in a suitable safe space by appointment. Families were also supported to spend time with people at the end of their lives safely and with dignity.

People who needed to isolate had a designated room and area. A dedicated staff team supported their care, meals and social needs.

Staff had infection control training, with refresher training arranged. The home had dedicated cleaning staff and carried out checks on cleanliness and infection control.

People could access their GP through virtual calls when needed. Community nurses also visited regularly to provide care and treatment.

What inspectors found, January 2020
Bushell House was rated Good in all five areas; inspectors found safe, kind and personalised care with effective management.
Inspectors made an unannounced visit on 20 November 2019. They spoke with people living in the home, relatives, staff and a health professional. They observed daily care and checked care plans, medicines, recruitment, training and quality records.
The home was rated Good overall and Good for Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Inspectors found people were protected from abuse, received their medicines safely and had enough staff available.
People were involved in decisions about their care and were treated with dignity and respect. Inspectors also found good support with food, drinks, health needs, activities, family contact and end of life care.
The last inspection was also rated Good, published on 31 May 2017. This was a planned inspection based on the previous rating. The report says the CQC will continue monitoring the home through its usual inspection programme.
Safe staffing and medicines
The home checked that staff were suitable, kept staffing levels under review and had arrangements for safe medicines management.
