The latest report, explained

What inspectors found, May 2018

Rated Good; inspectors found safe, kind and personalised care, with one medicines recording issue corrected during the visit.

This was an unannounced, comprehensive inspection on 23 April 2018. One inspector spoke with people living at the home, staff and visiting health professionals. They reviewed care plans, staff files, training records, medicines and quality checks.

All five areas were rated Good: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. People were protected from avoidable harm, staffing levels were considered safe, and staff received training and support.

Inspectors found that care was based on people's needs, choices and preferences. People were supported with food, health appointments, activities, family contact and decisions about their care.

The overall Good rating stayed the same as at the previous inspection. The report says there was no evidence of serious risks or concerns.

What inspectors praised
  • Safe staffing

Inspectors found enough staff to meet people's needs and saw staff spending time talking with people and offering reassurance.

“We saw there were sufficient staff on duty to respond to and meet people's individual needs.” from the report
  • Respectful care

Staff knew people well and supported their dignity, privacy, independence and choices.

“Staff promoted people's dignity and understood the importance of respecting people's choices.” from the report
  • Personalised support

Care plans included people's backgrounds, preferences, health needs and levels of independence. Staff offered different activities and one-to-one support.

“People who used the service were supported to engage in activities and interests which were meaningful to them.” from the report
  • Listening to people

The provider used meetings and feedback to respond to requests, including a request for more fish on the menu.

“This showed the provider listened and accommodated people's requests for change.” from the report
What inspectors were concerned about
  • One incomplete medicine instruction

    minor

The medicine record and container label did not initially state how much thickener to add to a person's drinks. Staff contacted the GP during the inspection and arranged for both to be updated.

“the MAR chart and label did not specify the amount staff had to use.” from the report
Questions to ask them, based on this report
  1. 01How will you make sure medicine labels and records always include the correct instructions, including the amount of thickener to use?
  2. 02How often are care plans reviewed, and how are changes in a person's needs shared with all staff?
  3. 03What activities are available for people who prefer one-to-one support rather than group activities?
  4. 04How can relatives give feedback or make a complaint, and how will they be told what action was taken?
  5. 05Has the manager's application to register with the CQC now been completed?
