What inspectors found, December 2018
Bradbury Lodge was rated Good; inspectors found safe, kind and personalised care, with some building improvements still in progress.
This was an unannounced inspection over two days. One inspector spoke with the three people living there, staff, the manager and an advocate. They observed care and a staff handover, and checked care files, medicines records, training records, complaints, accidents and quality checks.
The home supports up to six adults with learning disabilities and complex behaviour. Inspectors found people were protected from abuse, had suitable risk assessments and received medicines safely and on time. There were enough staff, the home was clean and accidents and incidents were reviewed.
Care plans were detailed and regularly reviewed. Staff had relevant training, people were supported with health appointments, healthy food, activities and contact with family. Inspectors saw kind and respectful care, and found the home was well managed.
The home was rated Good in all five areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. This was the same overall rating as at the previous inspection. The report says there was no evidence of serious risks or concerns.
Safe medicines
Staff received training and competency checks for medicines. Inspectors found that medicines were stored safely and given on time.
“People's medicines were stored safely and they received their medicine on time by staff trained to administer them safely.” from the report
Skilled behaviour support
Staff used individual behaviour plans and responded positively when people became distressed or presented behaviour that challenged others.
“We observed staff manage situations that were challenging to others, in a positive way and in line with the person's behaviour plan.” from the report
Kind and respectful care
People had positive relationships with staff. Inspectors saw staff respect people's privacy, choices and need for space.
“We observed staff maintaining a friendly and caring approach with people when presented with behaviour that challenged others.” from the report
Personalised activities
People were supported with activities, community access and personal goals. One person had been helped to go on holiday after many years without one.
“People were encouraged to be active and engage in a range of activities both in the home and in the community.” from the report
Building work ongoing
minorSome building adaptations and maintenance were still being completed for the needs of the current group. Inspectors noted that broken radiator covers had been reported and replacements were being arranged.
“The registered manager informed us that they were working with the landlord to ensure the property was maintained and updated as required.” from the report
