CQC report explained · a residential care home
What the CQC found at 22 De Parys Avenue
Rated Good: inspectors found the home performing well and meeting their expectations.
What inspectors found, November 2018
Rated Good; inspectors found safe, kind and personalised care, with improvements continuing under new leadership.
This was an unannounced comprehensive inspection. Inspectors spoke with everyone living at the home, observed care and meals, and spoke with a relative, the manager and four care staff. They also checked care records, staff records, medicines records, audits and meeting notes.
The home was rated Good in all five areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Inspectors found people were protected from abuse, had enough trained staff, received medicines safely and were supported to eat, access healthcare and take part in activities.
People were treated with kindness and respect. Care plans were personalised and supported independence. The home had a new registered manager since the previous inspection, and inspectors reported positive changes. The overall Good rating stayed the same.
Safe staffing and medicines
Inspectors found enough staff to meet people's needs, with no vacancies and no agency staff being used at the time. Medicines records and audits were in place, and medicines were reviewed regularly.
“People continued to receive their medicines when they needed them and in a safe way.” from the report
Kind and respectful care
Staff supported people patiently and respectfully. They adapted communication and encouraged people to make choices and do tasks for themselves.
“Staff continued to treat people with kindness and compassion.” from the report
Personalised support
Support plans included people's life histories, preferences and religious beliefs. People were supported to take part in activities, maintain relationships and build independent living skills.
“Support plans that we saw were detailed and personalised, taking into account people's life history, day to day preferences and religious beliefs.” from the report
Positive leadership
Inspectors found an open, person-centred culture under the new manager. The home used audits, feedback and outside professionals to improve support.
“The registered manager promoted a positive culture that was person-centred, open, inclusive and achieved good outcomes for people.” from the report
Recruitment checks still being strengthened
minorSafe recruitment checks were in place, but the provider was introducing a new system to strengthen them further.
“The registered manager was able to show us that the provider was in the process of implementing a new system which would strengthen the existing processes.” from the report
Some plans were still being developed
